Introduction: Why Gijón?
Gijón, Asturias, is one of the largest cities in Asturias, blending a historic atmosphere with the comfort of modern living. In my opinion, it’s the city with the highest number of young people, creating a vibrant urban life and encouraging the development of a wide variety of establishments where everyone can find something to enjoy.
Without a doubt, it’s the most modern city in Asturias, constantly growing and offering a wide range of opportunities for leisure, education, and work. I’ll share my experiences and observations to give you a complete view of each neighborhood in this charming city.

Although I intended to dedicate this article to the neighborhoods of Gijón, I can’t help but address a question that often concerns those planning to move to Asturias: where is it better to live—Gijón or Oviedo?
First thought: wherever you can find housing 🙂 Finding a home here isn’t an easy process, and by limiting yourself to just one city, you significantly narrow down your options.
Second thought: Gijón and Oviedo are the largest cities in the region, but is it really essential to live in a big city? Asturias offers many lesser-known but equally charming towns, like
Avilés, Villaviciosa, Mieres del Camino, and others.
But back to the main question: Gijón or Oviedo?
Advantages of Gijón: proximity to the sea, a large population of young people, a more modern lifestyle, and some bike-friendly infrastructure in the city center.
Disadvantages of Gijón: in high season, the city is crowded with tourists; many neighborhoods outside the center feel like clusters of concrete buildings with few green areas; higher housing prices; and occasional unpleasant smells from industrial areas.

Advantages of Oviedo: the capital of Asturias, one of the cleanest cities in Europe; numerous parks and cozy neighborhoods; a compact city with affordable housing and low crime rates.
Disadvantages of Oviedo: lacks bike infrastructure and has no nearby access to the sea.
Both cities offer well-developed infrastructure: schools, children's activities, modern hospitals; in short, everything needed for a comfortable life. From my observations, most people choose Oviedo, but I recommend visiting both cities and choosing the one that captures your heart.
